TIM BAKKER published his first song at the age of twelve, demonstrating to those around him that his promising career in the music industry was imminent. From the age of 10 he was tutored at a prestigious private music school in Cape Town, South Africa while continuing his formal education at a public school and winning numerous music awards along the way. His final year of high school saw the crumbling of the apartheid regime in South Africa, and for the first time in 40 years, South Africans were allowed into international competition. It was during a school music tour to Europe, where he represented South Africa at a youth music competition and beat the rest of the world to win first prize, where he realized that music is his passion and cemented Tim’s determination to make music his career.
After graduating in 1997 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Performing Arts from Stellenbosch University, one of Africa’s elite music institutions, Tim enjoyed success in various performances around the country, ranging from studio session work as an instrumentalist, singer and producer, to classical performances, including freelance performances with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, playing in ballets, operas, symphony concerts, and musicals.
In 1998, while completing his postgraduate studies, Tim became the Music Director for a prominent church in South Africa and served there in various roles until 2004.
After traveling back and forth to Israel for 7 years, serving in various capacities with the ICEJ (International Christian Embassy Jerusalem) in Israel, Tim temporarily relocated to Jerusalem for 7 months, where he served as the Assistant Music Director for a large worldwide christian worship festival and also produced a LIVE album which was distributed internationally that same year. This led to Tim working with world-class musicians from around the globe and it became the catalyst for his eventual move to the USA.
By invitation, Tim moved to the United States to serve as the Music Director at a church in Boston, Massachusetts. He spent 3 years training and directing multiple music teams, while being involved in various music projects throughout the United States and abroad, including Central Asia, Africa, and Israel.
Tim returned to South Africa in July 2008 to spend a season with his family, but continued to travel.
In August 2009, he moved back to the USA where he took up a position as the Music Director at Journey Christian Church in Midlothian, Virginia. He served there for 3 years, after which he was invited to help plant a church in the same city. During this time he met his wife-to-be and they eventually served alongside each other to build a team from the ground up for a period of 18 months.
In January 2014, Tim shifted direction in his career and moved into music education and commercial music. He started teaching at School of Rock, America’s largest performance based education program with 160 schools around the world. He was promoted to the Music Director of two schools in the Richmond, VA area in January 2015. There he spends his time teaching keys, vocals, directing multiple season shows as well as the house band, and overseeing all the music programs of the school.
His passion for worship and the church remains as he participates in events and projects from time to time. Tim is also the founder of The Worship Space, an organization dedicated to equipping and inspiring churches, worship leaders and music directors through blogs, articles, shared resources and personal experiences.
He has traveled extensively throughout Southern Africa, Europe, Australia, Asia, Middle East, United Kingdom, United States and Canada. He has a heart for the nations and desires to play a part in reaching people and places through music.
He lives with his wife, Kate, in Richmond, Virginia.
